Call for submissions

The Third Annual Edge of the Woods Theatre Festival is now accepting proposals.

The Edge of the Woods Theatre Festival is an annual week-long travelling arts event celebrating theatre, food and public space in the Muskoka/Parry Sound Region of Ontario. The nightly event begins with delicious affordable food served on site and free arts activities for youth.  Following this, audiences are treated to an evening of pay-what-you-can outdoor theatre by local, national and international artists.

The festival is an ideal venue for artist-run companies or independent artists creating original, ambitious outdoor theatre. We are interested in supporting new site-specific pieces created for the festival itself, as well as those that are adapted and re-worked for this context. In past years we have presented work which draws from various forms including physical theatre, circus, dance, puppetry, choral singing, live music, clown, street theatre and storytelling.

Applications may correspond to one of the following categories:

1. A 15-20 minute piece which plays near the beginning of the evening to an all ages audience.
2. A 30-40 minute piece – a narrative anchor to the evening.  Here we invite thematically complex and thoughtful work geared towards adults.
3. A 5-10 minute piece which closes the evening.

Note: The festival provides honouraria ranging from $1000-$5000, determined by number of artists, travel considerations, and the scope of the show.  We will gladly provide support material for applications to additional funding.

The 2009 Edge of the Woods Theatre Festival was a huge success!  Over 5 days, over 600 spectators saw our work in four different towns, over 120 youth participated in our arts activities and we dished out over 200 bowls of soup!  Most importantly, we met amazing people in Burks Falls, Huntsville, Port Sydney and Bracebridge.  We are already looking forward to next year.  The planning starts now!

Edge of the Woods Theatre

The Edge of the Woods Theatre Company creates and presents artistic work for, with and about members of the Muskoka/Parry Sound region. Its activities include an annual travelling outdoor theatre event that combines alternative theatre performances, affordable food and arts activities. This event will be presented Five times in 4 different towns in July 2009: Huntsville, Bracebridge, Port Sydney and Burks Falls. The company is engaged in various artistic projects with members and groups from the community. In 2009, they introduced the “Where I’m From Project”, an arts education project that partners students from Huntsville High School with residents of Rogers Cove Retirement Lodge in Huntsville. They will also be working with local youth in August of 2009 on a project involving giant puppets, music and the history of the region.

The 2008 Festival was a Success!

This year’s festival was fantastic!

Thanks to all who came out!

This year we brought together over 150 spectators, 23 professional and community artists and one giant moose.  Three professional performances from Toronto delighted audience members.  We had Irish Dancing, Unicycling, Impromptu Shakespeare Monologues, Mime, and Country, Folk and Classical musicians, all local artists, 14 in all.  Over 50 youth participated in our stilt, puppet making and drama activities, including walking our giant moose down mainstreet Huntsville.  It was a unique and wonderful weekend and its effects reached over 600 people.
